LISTEN to Jeff Kriet incredulously interview Paul Mueller about his 32-pound, Day 2 Classic limit

You can’t blame 2010 Bassmaster Classic Runner-up Jeff Kriet for phoning in the first few moments of his pre-weigh-in interview yesterday with B.A.S.S. Nation angler Paul Mueller, whom BassTrakk indicated had caught only three fish for four pounds on Day 2 of the 2014 Classic on Alabama's Lake Guntersville.

But as Mueller nonchalantly mentioned, “I got ‘em pretty good today – I’ve got over 30,” Kriet stopped in his tracks.

“Whoah, whoa, whoa!” Kriet said, signaling for the driver of Mueller’s tow vehicle to stop, so he could climb aboard Mueller’s boat, which was being trailered away from the boat ramp to the 'bump station." That's where Bassmaster officials check tournament competitors' livewells to ensure all their fish meet the minimum-size limit.

Mueller offered to show his bass to Kriet, who replied skeptically, “I’d like to see two.” But upon seeing those first two, Kriet became genuinely interested. “I’m going to peek in this side [of the livewell] now!" Kriet said, excitedly. "… Let’s see what we got here.”

“Oh my goodness, You really may have what you said you did!" Kriet exclaimed, incredulously. "I thought you were just big-eyeing them, dude! … You’re going to cause quite a stir.”

Having weighed his five fish with a hand scale, Mueller said they weighed a combined 33 1/3 pounds.

“I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I’m going to say you’re probably going to be fine to fish tomorrow,” Kriet assured Mueller.

Indeed, he was fine – more than fine. His huge limit weighed 32-3, jumping him from 47th place to 5th, less than six pounds behind leader Edwin Evers. He launched this morning in 5th place with a legitimate chance to win the Bassmaster Classic for the B.A.S.S. Nation. As of 11:30 a.m. on the final day of competition, he was in 2nd place (unoficially, as per BassTrakk data), with 18 pound, 2 ounces, behind Randy Howell, who had 25-8 at the time.

Bassmaster.com recruited Kriet, who did not qualify for this year’s Classic, to interview Guntersville contenders yesterday as they came of the water. 1999 Bassmaster Classic Champion Davy will conduct the “Take Out Live” interviews today, starting at about 2:30 p.m.

Bassmaster.com is covering the Bassmaster Classic live in numerous ways, including a live blog and the War Room. For more information on how to follow the Classic live, read this article.
